We were recently appointed to carry out a complete re-roof at the Barley Sheaf pub in Gorran Haven, near St Austell, Cornwall.

This was a full re-roofing project involving the supply and installation of new Spanish slates throughout, alongside the installation of a new code 6 lead box valley carried out by our dedicated lead work team.

Projects of this nature require careful planning, a high standard of craftsmanship and a thorough understanding of both slating and lead work, and this job delivered on all fronts.

Spanish Slates, A Premium Roofing Material

The slates specified for this project were Spanish slates, one of the most popular and widely respected natural roofing materials used across the UK today.

Spanish slates are quarried from some of the finest slate deposits in Europe, producing a roofing material that is dense, durable and exceptionally weather resistant.

They are available in a consistent dark blue-grey tone that weathers beautifully over time, giving a roof a natural, characterful appearance that sits sympathetically on both traditional and contemporary buildings.

Why Choose Spanish Slates?

For a pub or commercial property in a Cornish coastal location such as Gorran Haven, the choice of roofing material matters considerably.

The Cornish coast is one of the most demanding environments for any building, with high winds, driving rain and salt air placing considerable strain on a roof over the years. Spanish slates are well suited to exactly these conditions.

Their density and natural impermeability make them highly resistant to water ingress, frost damage and the general wear that a coastal climate brings. A well-installed Spanish slate roof, laid correctly with the right underlay and fixings, can realistically be expected to perform for well in excess of 50 years.

Code 6 Lead Box Valley

Alongside the re-slating, our specialist lead work team installed a new code 6 lead box valley as part of this project.

A valley is the internal angle formed where two roof slopes meet, and it is one of the most critical areas of any roof in terms of weatherproofing. Water running down both slopes converges at the valley, meaning it must be detailed correctly to carry that volume of water away without any risk of ingress into the roof structure below.

Why Code 6 Lead?

Code 6 lead is a heavier gauge of lead sheet that is particularly well suited to valley applications. Its additional thickness gives it greater durability and longevity compared to lighter codes, making it the right specification for a valley that will be carrying significant volumes of water over its lifetime.

Lead has been used in roofing for centuries and remains the material of choice for valleys, flashings and other critical weathering details, owing to its malleability, longevity and proven performance in all weathers.

A correctly installed lead box valley, carried out by an experienced lead worker, will outlast almost any other roofing material and should require no maintenance for decades.

Commercial Re-Roofing in Cornwall

This project at the Barley Sheaf pub in Gorran Haven is a good example of the commercial re-roofing work we carry out across Cornwall. Whether the building is a private residence, a listed property, a pub or a commercial premises, our approach is always the same.

We assess the building carefully, specify the right materials for the location and the style of the property, and carry out the work to the highest standard of craftsmanship from start to finish.

We are experienced in working on all types of roofing across Cornwall, including natural slate, plain tile, lead work, flat roofing and solar panel installation.

As registered LABC contractors, we are also able to manage building regulations applications where required, making the process straightforward for our clients from start to finish.
